What I see tripping up most people
I'm the person who reviews pump repair specs before they go out the door—roughly 230 of them a year. In Q1 2024, I flagged 11% of first-round jobs for one of two repeated mistakes: a check valve installed wrong, or a pressure tank nobody tested before calling the pump bad.
If you're dealing with a Grundfos circulation pump check valve or a Grundfos well pump troubleshooting session, this checklist is for you. There are seven steps, and the order matters. Work through them before you order parts.
Step 1: Kill the power and write down what you're working with
Before anything else, turn off the breaker. Then find the pump nameplate and write down the model number, product number, and voltage. You can't troubleshoot a Grundfos well pump properly if you don't know whether it's single-phase or three-phase, or whether the control box is separate.
Also write down the pressure gauge reading with the pump off. I do this on a sticky note every time. (Mental note: I should just print a form instead of sticky notes.)
Step 2: Rule out power and the pressure switch first
I've lost count of the 'dead pump' calls that turned out to be a tripped breaker, a blown fuse, or a pressure switch with burned contacts. Check voltage at the pressure switch and at the motor terminals. If you are not comfortable with a multimeter, stop and call a technician. Safety isn't a checklist item you can skip.
If power is fine, test the pressure switch. Tapping it gently can sometimes free a stuck contact, but that's a diagnostic clue, not a fix. If the contacts are burnt, replace the switch.
Step 3: Check the pressure tank air charge before declaring the check valve bad
This is the step most people skip, and the biggest source of ghost check-valve failures. A waterlogged pressure tank makes a well pump short-cycle, which feels exactly like a check valve not holding.
Turn the pump off, open a faucet until the pressure gauge reads zero, then check the air pressure at the tank's Schrader valve. It should be roughly 2 psi below the pressure switch cut-in setting—or rather, about 28 psi for a 30/50 switch. If the tank pressure is near zero or water dribbles out of the air valve, the bladder is likely broken.
Everything in the standard troubleshooting flow says 'check the pressure switch first.' In practice, the pressure switch is often the victim, not the cause. I learned this the hard way when I replaced a perfectly good pressure switch because I didn't check the tank first.
Step 4: Test whether the check valve is actually holding
A faulty check valve can produce two different symptoms: the pump short-cycles because the water column drains back, or it runs but produces little pressure because the valve is stuck closed.
For a Grundfos well pump, start with a pressure-drop test. With the pump off and the system at normal pressure, watch the pressure gauge for five minutes. If it drops while nobody is using water, something is letting water flow backward. If you have a valve above the check valve, close it after pressurizing. If the pressure now holds, the leak is below—meaning the check valve or the pipe to it. If it still drops, the leak is in the tank or house plumbing.
For a Grundfos circulation pump check valve, the field test is simpler. After the pump has been off for a while, feel the pipe on both sides of the valve. If the downstream side stays warm or hot with the pump off, the valve is letting gravity circulation happen. An IR thermometer helps identify the small temperature difference.
Step 5: Inspect the check valve orientation and spring direction
Trust me on this one: check the arrow first.
Honestly, most 'bad' check valves that come through my desk aren't defective. They're installed backwards. There's normally an arrow on the valve body, and it must point in the direction of flow—toward the pressure tank or the delivery pipe, not toward the pump.
With spring-loaded valves, orientation matters beyond the arrow. Some valves are designed for vertical or horizontal-only installation. Install one in the wrong plane and the disc can hang open. Some Grundfos service instructions show the spring position in the exploded view. Take 30 seconds to look it up. In 2022, a reversed check valve on a circulator cost our service team an entire day and an angry callback. That's why I write the flow direction on every work order.
And don't assume a new valve is good. I've rejected a full box because a couple of seats had plastic flash from molding. If it doesn't seal cleanly, it doesn't go on the pump.
Step 6: Look for debris, not just bad parts
A stuck-open check valve is often stuck open because of sand, scale, or rust flakes. In a well pump, sand can hold the disc open. In a closed heating loop, magnetite can do the same thing. If you replace a check valve without flushing the system, the new valve will get dirty too.
If the valve is accessible, take it out and bench-test it before ordering a replacement. Pour water through it in the flow direction—it should pass freely. Then try pouring it backward—it should hold. If it leaks, you've found the problem. If it's clean and holds, keep looking.
Step 7: Run at least two full pump cycles before closing the cover
There's something satisfying about watching a pump that used to cycle every fifteen seconds settle into a normal cycle. But don't close the cover after one cycle. Time the recovery from cut-in to cut-out and write it down. If the cycling is still abnormal, the fix isn't done.
For a Grundfos circulation pump, listen for water hammer when the pump stops. That can mean the check valve is closing too fast, or the spring pressure is wrong. A few minutes of observation now saves an emergency call later.
What I see tripping up most people
- Replacing the pump before testing the pressure tank. The pump is not always the problem.
- Installing the Grundfos circulation pump check valve with the arrow pointing the wrong way. It happens more than it should, even with the arrow printed right there.
- Skipping the control box on single-phase submersibles. A weak capacitor can make a motor hum and not start. That's a small part in the control box, not the pump.
- Ignoring a slow leak. A check valve that leaks just a little causes a pump to build pressure, shut off, then restart every few minutes. That's the failure mode that kills pumps over time.
One final point: Grundfos makes reliable pumps. That doesn't make the rest of the system maintenance-free. The check valve, pressure tank, and control box are part of the system. A brand-new pump on top of a failed tank isn't a fix.
5 minutes of verification beats 5 days of correction. I've watched that play out enough times to stop skipping checks.
