A Grundfos CR 3-17 Replacement Story: What Ordering a Pump Taught Me About Specs
The Tuesday before Thanksgiving, Henry came to my office and said, “The circulator pump in the south mechanical room is done.” I asked if it could wait until Monday. He didn’t laugh. The Lesson I Keep Re-Learning
The new pump went in. The pressure booster runs at a steady 52 psi—at least according to the digital readout, which is a feature my 2013-era pump didn’t have. The Magna 3 Grundfos circulator adjusts its speed based on what the building actually needs. I don’t have the energy numbers in front of me, but the sub-meter for the south mechanical room dropped noticeably. I’m not 100% sure of the exact savings; my best guess is somewhere in the 20-30% range. Take that with a grain of salt.
After five years of managing this building, I’ve come to believe something that sounds obvious but isn’t: the model number is the beginning of the conversation, not the end. The brand kept the model name, but the internals and controls have moved forward.
